Curtains Appropriate For The Shape And Size Of Your Kitchen Window

Kitchen windows come in a variety of shapes and sizes. Not every style of curtain is right for every window. Smaller windows may require a different approach than you would take with larger ones. The following are some ideas for dressing your various shaped windows.

Smaller Windows

Just because your window is smaller doesn’t mean that it can’t make a huge impact in your kitchen. Don’t be afraid to make that smaller window really stand out. Both designs featured below have used boldly patterned fabrics to really make a statement. The picture to the left displays an asymmetrical line on the upper curtain, which gives the illusion of a much larger window. This technique doesn’t bind the window like a box but instead encourages the eye to sweep upwards, thus making the window appear wider than it actually is. The addition of a simple cafe curtain affords some added privacy while still allowing plenty of light in when the blinds behind are open. The curtain to the left resembles a roman blind with a beautifully sculpted edge and features a tasseled edge for a “wow” effect.

Larger Windows

Embrace your larger windows by making them appear even larger. We love the idea of hanging extra long panels above the frame of the window to elongate them more. In the picture below left, multiple diamond printed panels were hung around the corner window in front of bamboo shades to soften the lines and add some sheer elegance.

Larger windows also give you the opportunity to use longer, fuller valences for a rich and cozy effect. The chocolate brown gingham material of the second picture has been gathered in several places and then allowed to softly hang on each side for a country chic effect.

Patio Or French Doors

According to hgtv.com, floor-length curtain panels are perfect for framing a large bay window or French doors with colour and patterns. Your choice of fabric can make a huge difference to the final look. For example, the two pictures below show two very similar styles of curtains as far as their size and shape. It’s the material, however, that makes these two rooms look so different. The first kitchen has a very delicate floral print in cool blue and white which makes it seem quite continental and elegant. The second kitchen features a rather rustic yet warm gingham fabric that makes this design much more casual and country in its look.

Curtains Tailored To The Size Of Your Kitchen

Smaller Kitchens

If you have a smaller kitcher, HGTV recommends choosing light, cool colours to make it appear larger and brighter. Cool colours include shades of blue, green, light purple, and light grey. They tend to appear as though they are receding, so they can often make a smaller room appear larger.

Oversized Kitchens

According to HGTV, you are better off using dark, warm colours in an oversized kitchen to give it a more balanced and inviting feeling. Warm colours include orange, red, yellow, brown, and any combinations of these and similar colours. They evoke the feelings of heat and closeness and they visually make it seem like objects are closer or advancing, so they are perfect for making a larger kitchen seem cozier.

Kitchen Curtains That Achieve A Particular Feeling

There are many different designs available, each one evoking a particular style or mood. Here are some examples of styles that you may like for your own kitchen depending on your personal preferences.

Neutrals

If you would like a clean, crisp, contemporary feel to your kitchen, try to use neutral shades for your curtains, paint, and cabinetry. These include soft whites, beige, tan, taupe, and greys. The neutrals will give a wonderful uniform and sleek appearance, but that doesn’t mean that your kitchen will look dull and boring. You can add small pops of colour that will stand out even more than they would in a room with lots of pattern and colour. Notice how striking the simple red tea towel in the first picture and the blue flowers in the second appear.

Showcase a Window 

If you are really looking to showcase a window without covering it up too much, why not try using a fabric valance? A valance can be an inexpensive yet very attractive window treatment. We have chosen three very distinct valence designs below to show you just how versatile they can be. You can choose ones with folds or pleats to give extra volume and interest as in the first two photos or you can simply keep it flat and obtain your desired look with a rich fabric that has an intricate pattern or design as in the third photo.

French Cafe

French cafe curtains are a very popular design choice. We love the iron-framed window with the sheer linen cafe curtains below. They are dressed with the simplicity and elegance of black and white. The second style of cafe curtains are much more provincial, yet equally stunning, in their contrasting floral and checked prints.

Country Farmhouse Look

If you like the look and feel of a country kitchen, here are three great kitchen curtain designs to help you achieve it. The first curtains are actually tablecloths which have been transformed into curtains! The gingham and floral patterns complement each other because of their colour palettes. In the second picture, there are not only adorable cafe curtains on the window but sweet gathered curtains also adorn the cupboard below. Finally the rich dark brown checked curtains in the third picture beautifully frame the picket fence and wreath, making this window a work of art.

Back To Nature

One of the hottest trends this season is the return to nature and kitchen curtains are no exception. Below you see two examples of curtains that come in patterns that echo the beauty of nature in their choice of floral patterns and vegetation colours. Unique Kitchen Curtain Rods

Finally, you can achieve some very unique kitchen curtain looks by  implementing an unusual or striking rod. The first picture shows a wire rack that can hold you plants while doubling as a curtain rod. The second is a rod that is made to get noticed. Its thicker design and chunky hooks especially stand out when paired with a simple white curtain. The third is an actual wooden rack which showcases a collection of artifacts above and a very non-traditional burlap valence below.
