How to Install Bamboo Blinds – Outside Mount

What Is an Outside Mount?

An outside mount simply means that your window treatment will cover the entire window including the window frame. You can either choose to attach it close to the outside of the window frame on the moulding or you can mount it to the wall around the perimeter of your window.

List of Tools Required

Metal measuring tape
Pencil
Power drill
Wall anchors

Approximate Time to Install: Less than 30 minutes per window.

Step 1: Remove your shades from their packaging and set the hardware aside.

Step 2: Place the shade where you would like it to hang. This can be on the outside edge of your frame or on the wall above your window frame. Make marks on your wall or window frames with your pencil inside the slots located in the blind’s headrail. These slots indicate where the brackets should be installed.

Step 3: Remove the wingnut from the screw on the bracket. Line up the screw holes in your brackets with the pencil marks that you made on the wall. Using your power drill, mount the brackets to the frame by inserting the screws into the corresponding holes. If you are screwing the brackets straight into drywall then it is a good idea to insert wall anchors into your screw holes before inserting your screws to hold them securely.

Step 4: Slide the headrail into the brackets and then screw on the wingnuts to secure the headrail.

Step 5: If your blinds have a cord, you can mount a cleat outside the window frame which you can use to secure the cord by tying it around the cleat.

The following video visually demonstrates how to install bamboo blinds using an outside mount.

What Are the Advantages of an Outside Mount?

There are many advantages to an outside mount including:

  • You can create the illusion of a wider and/or longer window by installing a blind above the actual window and/or wider than the actual window
  • You can cover up any previous holes or ugly spots on your walls
  • You have more flexibility about where you install your blind
  • You will find that it is easier to install than an inside mount

How to Install Bamboo Blinds – Inside Mount

What Is an Inside Mount?

An inside mount means that you install your blind so that it fits precisely inside the window frame. It is very important that your measurements are accurate so that your blinds will snugly fit on all sides of your window.

Step 1: Remove your shades from their packaging and set the hardware aside.

Step 2: Place the shade where you want it to hang inside the window frame; closer to the front or set in deeper depending on your desired look. Make marks on your inner window frames with your pencil inside the slots located in the blind’s headrail. These slots indicate where the brackets should be installed.

Step 3: Remove the wingnut from the screw on the bracket. Line up the screw holes in your brackets with the pencil marks that you made on the inside or your window frame. Using your power drill, mount the brackets to the frame by inserting the screws into the corresponding holes.

Step 4: Slide the headrail into the brackets and then screw on the wingnuts to secure the headrail.

What Are the Advantages of an Inside Mount?

There are also many advantages to an inside mount. These include:

  • You will have more light control as your blind will snugly cover your window with fewer gaps where light can peep through than an outside mount will have
  • You can achieve a very clean and minimalist look
  • You can choose to install it as deep or as shallow into your window as you prefer

Installations for Different Styles

Most types of bamboo shades will follow a similar installation to the one listed above with slight variations. Always take a look at the manufacturer’s specific guidelines for the exact steps to follow.

Some simpler versions of bamboo blinds require very little hardware to install. The following video shows the installation process for a very basic bamboo shade which only needs two eyelets to hang it up.
